Extra Help

Extra Help is also known as Low-Income Subsidy (LIS). LIS helps lower the cost of premiums, deductible, co-payments, and co-insurance. To qualify for LIS, you must be receiving Medicare benefits and have a limited income, based on the Federal Poverty Levels (FPL) shown here.

2015 Federal Poverty Level (FPL) Guidelines1

Family Size (Annual Income)
FPL (%) 1 2 3 4
100% $11,670 $15,730 $19,790 $23,850
135% $15,754.50 $21,235.50 $26,716.50 $32,197.50
150% $17,505 $23,595 $29,685 $35,775
300% $35,010 $47,190 $59,370 $71,550
400% $46,680 $62,920 $79,160 $95,400
500% $58,350 $78,650 $98,950 $119,250

Patients who have both Medicare benefits and Medicaid benefits are known as dual-eligible patients. If you are dual-eligible, you automatically qualify for full LIS. Your monthly co-pay would be up to $6.60 for brand drugs.

Here's how Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) can help:

Your FPL Your resources Your monthly co-pay
135% or less $8,580 or less per individual
$13,620 or less per couple
  • Up to $6.60 until you reach $6,680
  • After that, $0 for the remainder of the calendar year
More than 135% to 150% $13,300 or less per individual
$26,580 or less per couple
  • 15% of drug costs until you reach $6,680
  • After that, up to $6.60 for the remainder of the calendar year
